Taking long midday naps of more than 90 minutes also increase stroke risk by 25%, compared to napping for 30 minutes or less.
A combination of both sleeping for 9 hours or more at night and napping for more than 90 minutes increased stroke risk by 85%.
Although it is unclear why excess sleep increases stroke risk, it is known long nappers and sleepers are more likely to have increased waist circumferences and inactive lifestyles, which are increased risk factors for stroke.
The majority of strokes are linked to lifestyle factors and the functioning of your central nervous system.
A healthy lifestyle, including daily exercise, decreasing your stress level, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a nutritious diet and regular chiropractic care to make sure your central nervous system is working as best it can, are the vital steps necessary for a longer, healthy and happy life; and a reduced risk of stroke.
Make chiropractic a regular health habit for the whole family to ensure your spines and nervous systems are working the best they can.
And that is this week’s Family Health Minute.
