The farther you are from the equator, the more likely you are to have SAD; and women get it four times more than men.
Some doctors believe fewer daylight hours raises levels of melatonin and lowers levels of serotonin, two substances that help keep your sleep regular and your mood even.
Some of the SAD symptoms include: .......................................................................
*Low spirits for much of the day
*Hard to sleep
*Loss of concentration
*Lack of enjoyment
*Weight gain from overeating
Symptoms associated with SAD can also fall under the category of stress, which is a major trigger for a misaligned spine. When your spine is out of alignment, it is more challenging to exercise or get a good night’s sleep; which can have a negative effect on your mood.
Regular chiropractic care improves spinal mobility and releases endorphins in the body. A properly aligned spine can alleviate neck and back pain, improve sleep, decrease irritability, increase energy and ultimately enhance your overall mood.
Beyond chiropractic care, here are ways to manage your SAD symptoms:
1. Spend time outside to absorb sunlight.
2. Regular exercise can really lift your mood, and outdoor exercise, in the sunshine, has even more benefit.
3. Eat a balanced diet of veggies, whole grains, and fruits, and avoid sugar and "simple carbs" like white bread.
4. Keep your sleep on a regular schedule to keep your mood even and to maximize your time in daylight.
Get regular chiropractic checkups for the whole family, and make sure your spine and your brain are working the best they can.
Your health will be better because of it.
And that is this week’s Family Health Minute.
