What is Flat Head Syndrome?
Flat Head Syndrome, medically called Brachiocephaly, is when a baby develops a flat spot on the back or side of the head. Because a baby’s skull is soft and still forming, constant pressure in one area can cause it to lose its round shape.
How does it happen?
Flat spots usually form when babies spend long periods lying in one position, especially on their backs. This is common in the first few months when babies can’t sit or roll yet.
Why does it happen & what causes it?
-
Extended time lying in one position (crib, stroller, car seat)
-
Neck tightness (torticollis) making baby turn to one side
-
Premature birth (softer skull bones)
-
Position in the womb (e.g., twins or breech)
Possible side effects:
-
Uneven head or facial shape
-
Jaw or ear misalignment
-
Feeding or chewing challenges later in life
-
Limited neck movement (stiffness)
-
Delayed motor development (rolling, crawling, sitting)
-
Balance and coordination issues
-
Vision or hearing difficulties
-
Sleep discomfort
-
Self-esteem concerns as your child grows

How Neuro Chiropractic Care Helps
We use SOT and gentle cranial adjusting techniques to:
-
Relieve tension in the neck, spine and cranium (including dura and soft tissues)
-
Restore natural head movement
-
Support more symmetric skull growth
Best Results When Used Early
-
Ideally within the first 3–6 months, when the skull is most malleable and growth is rapid
-
Used alongside conservative measures like repositioning, tummy time and neck stretches
Gentle & Safe
- Light cranial adjustments, no forceful popping of sutures
- Goal: release tension, improve spinal alignment (especially upper cervical) (and hence body to brain nerve communication and function) and enhance neck mobility
Combined with early care and supportive exercises, babies get the best chance to grow round, strong, and balanced.
With the right care and guidance, most babies’ head shape improves significantly, and they thrive with greater comfort and ease.
