This week’s minute looks at the benefits walking has on your mental health.

Walking may be a misjudged form of exercise. Science continues to support walking boosts both your physical and mental health.

Here is how a 20 to 30 minute walk can change your mental health for the better:

Lowers Your Risk Of Developing Depression
Studies found that just twenty minutes a day of moderate aerobic activity, including cycling or brisk walking, could boost your emotional health.

Improves Your Overall Cognitive Functioning
Twenty to thirty minutes of daily aerobic exercise, such as walking, improves overall cognitive function.

Walking Releases Endorphins
Walking promotes the release of endorphins that boost mental health, decreases your sensitivity to stress and pain, and makes you feel euphoric.

Helps With Mental And Physical Fatigue
Twenty minutes of low intensity exercise, like walking, can dramatically decrease fatigue.

Strengthens Your Hippocampus
Walking can increase the size of your brain’s hippocampus which plays a critical role in forming and storing memories.

Improves Creativity
A Stanford study found walking increased a person’s “creative output” by an average of 60 percent.

Increases Blood Flow In Your Brain
A recent study discovered twenty minutes of walking increased cerebral blood flow which helps to bring “nutrients to your cells, and takes away toxins.”

Taking just a twenty-minute walk daily will keep your brain healthy and you happy.
