Breathing And Your Brain: Five Reasons To Grab The Controls

Welcome to this week’s Brain Based Wellness News.

In today’s news we will look at the effect controlled breathing has on your body and brain. There is a lot of research-tested truth to the cliché “just breathe” and it is not only to manage stress.

You are breathing all the time; however, you can change how you breathe, and as a result change how breathing affects your body and brain.

Controlled breathing brings in more oxygen and releases more carbon dioxide. It takes just three steps:

1. Inhale deeply through the nose, expanding the abdomen;
2. Hold the breath for a long moment; and
3. exhale through the mouth.

Here are five science-based reasons to add controlled breathing to your daily routine.

1. Manage Your Stress: Controlled breathing reduces stress in your brain, preventing future damage caused by high stress levels.

2. Manage Your Anxiety: Controlled breathing triggers the parasympathetic nervous system which increases focus and calmness and decreases feelings of anxiety.

3. Lower Your Blood Pressure and Heart Rate: Over time, using controlled breathing will result in lower blood pressure and heart rate, which can reduce the risk of stroke.

4. Spark Your Brain Growth: Controlled breathing in meditation causes an increase in brain size, specifically in areas associated with attention and sensory processing.

5. Change Your Genetic Expression: Controlled breathing can alter the expression of genes involved in immune function, energy metabolism, insulin secretion and how the body reacts to stress.

And of course, chiropractic care has been proven to help people better manage their overall health including improved breathing.

Get regular chiropractic checkups for the whole family, and make sure your spine and your brain are working the best they can.

Your health will be better because of it.
