How Diet Helps to Improve your Immune System

This week’s minute we are going to look at how diet helps to improve your immune system and to lower your overall risk to viruses and disease.

Some of the foods we eat can cause inflammation in the body.  Most of us when we think of inflammation we think of an injury or an accident and believe it or not food can cause an inflammatory reaction similar to an injury.

Inflammation, regardless of whether it is from an injury or from the food you eat, is nothing more than a chemical reaction (production of cytokines)  of your immune system to try to fix the problem.  Your immune system trying to fix a problem is a good thing.

The body produces both inflammatory cytokines and anti-inflammatory cytokines.

Unfortunately, a body constantly producing inflammatory cytokines whether  an injury or bad food choices puts a lot of stress on the immune system.  This can result in an immune system not doing its job, or overreacting.

Either case puts you at  a much higher risk to things like viruses and disease.

A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids causes more of the anti-inflammatory cytokines to be made. Flax seeds are one of the best vegetarian sources of omega-3s. Other rich sources are cold-water fish, hemp seeds, walnuts, chia seeds, and grass-fed beef.

Keep your immune system healthy with a nutritious diet, regular exercise, quality sleep, a positive attitude, and regular chiropractic care.

Make chiropractic a regular health habit for the whole family to ensure your spines and nervous systems are working the best they can.

And that is this week’s Family Health Minute.
